What to Know on CBD

CBD, or cannabidol, is the lesser known cousin of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana which is famous for its ‘high’ that it gives its users. Both are found in the plant cannabis sativa, which is widely known for its association with marijuana and marijuana culture.

While one might think that CBD and other cannabidols are in the same category as THC, the two substances differ fundamentally. While THC and marijuana are commonly sought after by its users for its psychoactive properties, CBD does not create nor cause this effect when taken.

CBD is more popular for its documented effects on anxiety. Researchers concluded that CBD has been shown to lower stress, and many individuals report that CBD helped them manage elevated heart rate levels caused by anxiety. The FDA has even approved a CBD derived product designed to treat childhood epilepsy syndromes like Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome.

CBD: Full Spectrum or Isolate?

The CBD market today is filled with all sorts of different products, from hand creams and moisturizers to even CBD dog food. But is all CBD equal? The short answer is no. Many different forms of CBD exist and all have varying advantages and disadvantages.

Isolate CBD

Isolate CBD is the purest form of CBD there is. It contains only CBD, and no other cannabinoids found naturally in the cannabis sativa plant. The main advantage of this form is that isolate-derived CBD is completely CBD. There are no traces of THC or any other naturally occurring compound from the cannabis sativa plant.

However, a disadvantage of isolate CBD is that it is possible that higher amounts of isolate CBD are needed to compare to other forms of CBD. Additionally, the substance is separated from many of the other cannabinoids and terpenes found naturally in the plant, taking away from what is commonly referred to as the ‘entourage effect.’

Isolate derived CBD is best for individuals who have specific needs such as stringent workplace drug rules to keep in mind.

Full Spectrum CBD

Full spectrum CBD, on the other hand, contains all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavinoids, and other naturally occurring substances from the cannabis sativa plant. This also includes THC, as it is produced naturally by the plant. This means that all full spectrum CBD products have a small THC content. Typically, full spectrum CBD products have a THC content of less than 3% as anything higher would be categorized as a marijuana product instead.

Researchers have found that the ‘entourage effect’ provided by full spectrum CBD has beneficial effects for managing pain, anxiety, inflammation, cancer, epilepsy, and fungal infections. However, more research needs to be done in these fields and continues to progress as the scientific community takes an interest in CBD.

Broad Spectrum CBD

Broad spectrum CBD is the compromise between full spectrum CBD and isolate CBD. CBD products categorized as broad spectrum CBD have all the cannabinoids and other substances found in full spectrum CBD, with the sole exclusion of THC. In other words, all of the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavinoids found in full spectrum CBD are present, without THC. Products that are classified as broad spectrum CBD seek to make full use of the ‘entourage effect,’ just without the THC.

This process still has its disadvantages. Because broad spectrum products are typically created in a process called THC remediation, possible degradation of the CBD could possibly occur. Additionally, some research shows the necessity of THC for the ‘entourage effect’ to fully take effect.

Why is CBG the Rolls Royce of Cannabinoids?

With the exploding popularity in the CBD market, there has been all kinds of CBD-related products. Stores have begun to sell CBD topicals, softgels, tinctures, and even products like sunscreen. But surprisingly, not many seem to be aware of CBD’s ‘big brother,’ CBG.

Widely known as the “Rolls Royce of cannabinoids, CBG is a cannabinoid typically present in small quantities in cannabis plants. Its nickname came about because of how expensive and difficult it is to produce. The reason so is because it is the ‘OG’ or granddaddy of all cannabinoids.

In the process of creating THC and CBD, the cannabis plant directs enzymes towards CBGA in order to create either THCA or CBDA. Since CBD, and other minor cannabinoids are derived from CBG, there has been great interest in CBG and its possible therapeutic uses and applications.

Much of the research today has been focused solely upon THC and CBD, and less so of the other minor cannabinoids typically present in a cannabis plant. However, some are beginning to take interest in CBG, including the United States government who in 2018 created funding opportunities for researchers seeking to explore the broad effects of CBG and alike.

Research on CBG is still in progress today. However, what researchers have already discovered about it is promising. Research has already shown that CBG has many antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and and pain support properties, and scientists continue to discover how CBG affects Huntington’s Disease, colon cancer, and many other conditions.

The full potential of CBG is still very much unknown to the scientific community. New studies are still being published on CBG and its various effects on the human body, including this one on MRSA superbugs and CBG. There is no doubt that people, both researchers and consumers alike are interested in CBG as the next big thing.

Libido and CBD: What We Know

In the early 1990s, scientists discovered the human endocannabinoid system, which consist of small receptors that react to cannabis products and even produce their own cannabinoid chemicals known as endocannabinoids.

The receptors are activated when you consume CBD or other cannabinoids. As your receptors activate, your body responds by reducing inflammation among other things.

For Men

A report from 2009 revealed that human testicles have cannabinoid receptors. Research is still unclear on whether activating the receptors in the testes is a good thing.

Another study from 2015 discovered that males who consume cannabis may experience low libido. It also discovered that males and females can get a sex drive jump from infrequent consumption.

Another report from 2015 found that CBD reduced anxiety. Because anxiety is a common cause of low sex drive, CBD products could boost libido by reducing it.

For Women

According to a major research study from 2015, CBD can help men and women with PTSD, social anxiety, and other similar conditions. Most studies involved oral or inhaled consumption

CBD and Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction can be long or short term. It can mean maintaining an erection is hard or impossible. ED is a broad term for the penis problems of more than 30 million men in the US.

A 2014 research study shows that Ayurveda doctors have been successfully using cannabinoid products as an erectile dysfunction treatment for decades. CBD could help relax blood vessels and increase blood flow to the penis.

CBD for Low Libido

Sometimes you’re just not in the mood. But what about when you’re never in the mood? There’s a CBD product for that.

A research study was conducted in 2017 demonstrating the effects of CBD products. CBD products lit up the sexual arousal area of the subject’s brains, implying that CBD could fix a low libido.
